Kataragama is an ancient city of Sri Lanka which is a sacred place
that has a history of more than 2500 year. Mahawansaya talk about the importance of Kataragama.
According to the Mahawansaya, the Lord Buddha visited Kataragama on
his third visit to Sri Lanka. Lord Buddha preached the Dhamma and King Mahasena
became a Bodhisathva.
Kataragama is sacred to the God Karthikeya, from whome it was called
Karthikeya Grama shortened to Kajara-gama and then to Kataragama.Kataragama has several tradition, which Buddhist,Tamil and Hindu.
